Why certification matters

Why choose ISO 50001 certification?

Independent assurance of a structured approach to energy management and measurable energy performance improvement.

✦

Improve energy performance

Build a systematic approach to improving energy efficiency, energy use and energy consumption.

✦

Identify savings opportunities

Use energy data to find significant energy uses and opportunities for better performance.

✦

Strengthen cost control

Help manage exposure to energy costs through performance monitoring and improvement.

✦

Build stakeholder confidence

Demonstrate an independently assessed commitment to responsible energy management.

✦

Support sustainability objectives

Better energy performance can contribute to environmental and climate-related goals.

✦

Drive continual improvement

Use energy objectives, baselines, indicators and management review to sustain progress.

The standard

What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001:2018 specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an energy management system (EnMS). It helps organisations systematically improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, energy use and energy consumption.

Current edition: ISO 50001:2018, with Amendment 1:2024 addressing climate-action considerations. This amendment does not create a new 2024 edition.

ISO 50001 is technology-neutral. Organisations are not required to install solar panels or other renewable-energy equipment to seek certification.

Key EnMS requirements

  • Scope, context, leadership and energy policy
  • Energy review and significant energy uses
  • Energy baselines and performance indicators (EnPIs)
  • Energy objectives, targets and action plans
  • Operational control, design and procurement
  • Monitoring, internal audit, management review and improvement
A clear pathway

Our ISO 50001 certification process

A practical, structured audit programme with independent certification decisions.

01

Discuss your energy scope

Share your sites, energy uses, processes and proposed EnMS boundaries.

02

Confirm audit arrangements

The certification body reviews the application, scope, energy complexity and audit programme

03

Stage 1 audit

Review documented arrangements, energy planning, audit readiness and management-system scope.

04

Stage 2 audit

Assess implemented controls and evidence of continual improvement in energy performance.

05

Independent certification decision

The certification body reviews audit results and makes the certification decision.

06

Surveillance and renewal

Scheduled surveillance and recertification audits maintain ongoing assurance.

Already certified?

Transfer your ISO 50001 certification

If you are already ISO 50001 certified, ask about transferring to another certification body. Eligibility depends on the certificate, audit history, scope, accreditation and the receiving certification body’s transfer rules.

Common questions

ISO 50001 certification FAQs

What is ISO 50001 certification?
Independent certification of an energy management system (EnMS) against ISO 50001 requirements.
What is the current edition of ISO 50001?
ISO 50001:2018 remains current, with Amendment 1:2024 addressing climate-action considerations.
Who can be certified?
Organisations of any size or sector, including manufacturers, commercial buildings, logistics, utilities and service providers, where an EnMS scope is defined.
Does ISO 50001 require renewable energy or solar panels?
No. ISO 50001 is technology-neutral and focuses on systematic improvement of energy performance, not mandatory renewable technology.
Is ISO 50001 the same as ISO 14001?
No. ISO 50001 focuses on energy performance and the EnMS; ISO 14001 addresses broader environmental management. They can be integrated.
How is energy performance demonstrated?
Through energy reviews, energy baselines, energy performance indicators (EnPIs), objectives, monitoring and evidence of continual improvement.
How long does ISO 50001 certification take?
Timing depends on energy complexity, sites, EnMS maturity, audit planning and resolution of findings.
Can we transfer an existing certificate?
Potentially, subject to the receiving certification body’s transfer requirements, certificate validity, accreditation and audit history.
Who issues the certificate?
The relevant certification body makes the independent decision and issues the certificate; Blue Wolf coordinates certification services.
