The standard

What is ISO 13485 certification?

ISO 13485:2016 is the international quality management system standard for medical devices and related services. It addresses requirements for organizations that need to demonstrate their ability to provide medical devices and related services consistently meeting customer and applicable regulatory requirements.

Its emphasis includes documented controls, product realization, design and development where applicable, purchasing, process validation, traceability, complaint handling, and corrective action.

Current edition: ISO 13485:2016, confirmed by ISO in 2025. The standard is distinct from ISO 9001 and is tailored to the medical-device sector.

Key areas considered during an audit

  • QMS documentation and management responsibility
  • Resource and competency management
  • Design controls, where applicable
  • Supplier and outsourced-process controls
  • Production, validation and traceability
  • Feedback, complaints and corrective action
  • Internal audits and management review

Common questions

ISO 13485 certification FAQs

What is ISO 13485 certification?
It is third-party certification of a quality management system against ISO 13485:2016, designed for organizations involved in medical devices and related services.
Who can seek ISO 13485 certification?
Depending on the scope, manufacturers, designers, contract manufacturers, component suppliers, sterilization providers, distributors and service organizations may be eligible.
Does ISO 13485 certification mean a medical device is FDA approved?
No. Management-system certification does not approve a device or replace market authorization, registration, regulatory inspections or other legal requirements.
How long does ISO 13485 certification take?
Timing depends on scope, readiness, number of sites, personnel, activities and the closure of any audit findings. We provide an audit plan after reviewing your details.
What determines the certification cost?
Audit duration and fees depend on employee numbers, complexity, design responsibility, outsourced activities, locations and the certification body’s rules.
Can we transfer an existing ISO 13485 certificate?
Potentially. Transfers depend on the issuing body, certificate validity, accreditation arrangements and a review of previous audit findings.
How does ISO 13485 relate to the FDA QMSR?
The FDA Quality Management System Regulation effective February 2, 2026 incorporates ISO 13485:2016 by reference. Certification and FDA compliance are distinct; organizations must meet all applicable FDA requirements.
